    Hi

I have noticed that some windmill palms have a thicker base than others. Is this due to luck, pick of the crop? use of specific fertilizers? Could one over fertilize (granular) palm trees? Also, I intend to use lights during the winter- are there any concerns with use of lights? Will keeping palm trees indoor for the winter hurt them, make them turn into indoor plants and take on indoor type of growth?

Is it that cold where you are? I have my palms out all winter. As for the thicker trunk, I would imagine its just age, just like with most trees.

    palma,
You should have little if any trouble with Windmill palm growth in New Westminster.
As far as trunk diameter goes, there is some genetics regarding a slimmer trunk nearest the base. Many times however it's a result of people pruning the trees too early, as the leaves provide much needed nutrients. I woudn't bother with growing these palms indoors.

    Cheers, Barrie.
