I am curious to know why some floras include the chromosome number for each species. Is there a specific purpose that this piece of information is often sought for? Does this have to do with hybridization and speciation? I don't have a background in genetics, but any articles or information that I can use to learn more would be appreciated.

    Thank you.

Yes I think it has to do with the effect of polyploidy on hybridization and speciation. This is a concise article on the topic. Polyploidy in Plant Breeding
