white spruce tree seeds

    hi...i am new to this site...you guys provide alot of knowledge and have learned alot by postings...i have a large white spruce tree in yard..i have taken some seeds out of cone and want to have a project with my kids and grow from cup and then transfer to ground when bigger...how long does it take before we will see seedling come up? thanks..tim

    The seeds need to be stratified first. I find a small plastic grocery store container works well (the kind you find at the self serve olive bin), filled half way with moist vermiculite. Mix the seeds into the vermiculite, put the lid on (punch a few holes in it for good measure), and stick in the fridge until March-April.

    Come spring, plant them in the cups as planned, they should sprout fairly quickly on a warm windowsill. Move the cups outside when threat of frost has passed. You should be able to plant them in the ground after 2 or 3 years.
