We have a 40-year old cactus (it came from Sears in a 2" pot) that has recently started blooming and producing fruit. It blooms only at night and the flowers close in the sun then shrivel and usually fall off within 24 hours. A couple of weeks ago, two flowers left knots that ripened into orange balls.

I think it's some kind of Cereus but I'd like to know which one specifically. I'd also like to know what would cause it to bloom so profusely after all this time.

    Thank you.

Maybe cereus peruvianus? It is also called the apple cactus. Not positive, though.

Hmm...this picture is certainly the same plant but it also calls it the "hedge cactus" and I thought that was Cereus hildmannianus rather than repandus. I guess they are close enough that it doesn't make much difference what you call it.

Well I just took a peek in the

    Thank you.
