    Hi,
I am like most on the UBC forum a fanatical collector and maple lover and what drives me crazy is this:
    1. Where can you get those rare and unusual plants, where are the nurseries and places to buy or trade such plants.
    2. Those places as in the UE, as wonderful Esveld are not allowed to export the rare and unusual plants, or only certain plants with the nightmare of import licenses. Scion is possible if you have the space and facilities to graft. Yes I am a grafter but I have nowhere to do the grafting or keep the grafts after, some nurseries are wonderful and people are willing to help bless them, but it is also a problem of gettting the scion alive and safely to them and 2 years quarentine.
    What about Australia?No exporting either.
Is there anyway to get some of these beuautiful plants from Japan, I have a book with places but besides linguistic problems, they are not able to export outside Japan.
With the same plants or different varients well pointed out by Mr.shep, in Dissectum Nigrum where we discussed nomenclature problems is another issue presenting problems in acquiring plants.
4.Finally I am so fustrated as the few places to buy plants having left the UK for America to buy in America, anywhere we can get plants.
Is there anybody out there or am I yodeling in the Alps????
    Best Wishes.
    P

The grass is always greener on the other side.

I saw a plant I wanted once in a Cornish nursery. They had gotten it from a grower in Oregon. On the same trip another British plantsman whose nursery was known widely for having special stuff became almost beside himself when he found out we were from the States, firing off questions like was there a US version of the RHS Plant Finder and so on in rapid succession.

You see, he was soon to come over here on his first plant seeking trip because

WE HAD ALL THE GOOD PLANTS HERE.

All you have to do is find out who has the types of plants you are interested in here in the States. There is not a perfect overlap of varieties between foreign and domestic sources. That does not mean that all the choice varieties are found overseas only. Being much larger we don't have an equivalent to the RHS Plant Finder but these days everyone can search the internet for suppliers. By now most rare plant retailers have some kind of internet presence.

You might also want to look for THE PLANT LOCATOR - WESTERN REGION (2004, Timber Press/Black-Eyed Susans Press, Portland) sourcebook at a library or through commercial sources. It's modeled after the RHS Plant Finder but does not come out every year, or cover the whole country.

    Dear Ron B,
Thank You for taking the time to reply, as well as for the information and assistance in this matter. The types of plants are maples, bamboos, unusual conifers mainly, but an open mind is always good, but I specialise in Maples.
I have found some really good sellers and of course there are brilliant American sellers.I am very fortunate to have some very good friends who are American sellers, and I certainly did not intend to infer the sellers nor plants are not nice or good in America.
The plants like Sango nishiki-a variegated Sango, Pung kil which is a red linearilobum, other cultivar of the palmatum, and other species, the hybrids and the species themselves many are not available. American nurseries with very good exceptions seem to have pretty much the usual generic fayre. Unfortunatly the named are not available in America, but I have very good fortune to find Roseum, Argento variegatum which is a varient of Versicolour, or illegitimate name of Versicolour itself, but shows no pink variegation at this time, and others but it is just not consistant and very time consuming. How to proceed once you cover the general concensus. The American sellers who havea variety I found and friends are really wonderful, do have wonderful plants but is difficult unlike Europe if you are not looking generally seeking in comparison to Esveld, Maillot,I found a wonderful nursery in Czech Republic etc who have collected directly from Japan, and elsewhere, where American nurserys due to Agricultural law are not allowed.
    Very kindest regards,
    P

    P -

I would suggest you look at some nurseries in your area that have a wide selection. Topiary Gardens in NY is one of my favorites. They have well over 400 varieties - many rare and unusual. Another great one on the East Coast is Eastwoods Nursery. Both will sell by mail or you can pick up. Greers Gardens is also a good source, although on the West Coast. World Plants in California specializes in selling new grafts, but they often have unusual or rare offerings.

True! Eastfork is great! Smaller selection of what one might consider 'unusual', which is what I thougt P was after, but Eastfork does have some unusual things as well (ie A.p. 'Geisha Gone Wild')

    Thank you Alex,
Rob is a really nice bloke and I have and continue to buy from him, and he is one of the great nursery persons I spoke of, along with Sam, but I have to annoy them and their patient with me as is Diane from Topiery, even though I am a pain and I have had very good fortune in meeting them.
Hinode nishiki-a brown red variegate is a coveted plant but sadly not available.
Thank you for your suggestion which is greatly appreciated.
