It's kind of ironic isn't it that removing something from the garden can seem more like an addition? That's the case today when our tree cutter took down a dead Arbutus before it started to drop rotten branches on the lovely Garry Oak below. Real progress . . . I also love it when somebody else does the work for a change.
I love this posting Margot, so simple and to the point. And I totally agree with getting someone else to do the work. Especially where a chainsaw is concerned.
Not to mention insurance! No wonder your penstemon purple flower is so happy — poor tree — I suppose it was a victim of that disease thé Arbutus had a few yrs ago here? I had a typical holly tree cut down recently It never had berries and basically it’s a weed in our neck of the woods this side of Salish Sea So the arbor man (the guy with insurance!) cut it in to manageable chunks without branches to give to our friend who « turns » wood in to chess sets and jewellery bowls etc
I've had an old Maple tree trunk that was cut down made into my chess set. I do love to see everything used. Wood is so tactile and beautiful.
We also took down a holly tree a few years ago because I read that it is considered an invasive plant in BC. Ours did have berries though it seemed that very few germinated - around the garden at least. Now, however, over 3 years later, they are germinating in the 100s, especially where the tree used to grow. I feel guilty now that I allowed birds to carry seeds into the forest for as long as I did.
