My 2 year old peach tree is infested with ants. I was told that the ants were an indicator of another problem. We closely inspected the tree and found blackened scaly areas seeping with sap around where the branches intersect. Any idea what that may be? The tree has special meaning to us and we really would like to save it if possible.

Ants on a tree usually indicate aphids or scale insects. The sap could indicate a different problem: borers, which are very common on peach trees. Photos of the problem areas would be very helpful. Check where the ants are going to determine what pest is at work.

I can't speak to your exact problem, but whenever mine have ants, when I inspect closely it's aphids, and I spray with something called "endall". Very effective.
