I would like to hollow out the center and use it as a planter, but what about around the outside? I was thinking about Lithodora, but I don't know if it would be good for a tree stump.

    Any ideas?

I'm surprised lithodora would grow in New England.

I bought some last year and planted it around a little statue. It looks like it made it through the winter. I have to trim it a little, but it seems fine. I did read that the coldest zone it can handle is 6. I am kind of in between 5 and 6. It was so pretty and a reasonable price, so I thought I'd give it a try. So far, good results.
I am open for other suggestions though.

Why don't you use it as a nice pot stand for a large not too shallow pot/bowl and fill it full of annuals that work in your area. Have something that will spillover the edge and down the stump

Hire a chain-saw artist and have the stump transformed into a sculpture.

    Liz,
Yes, I was thinking about petunias or something like that.

For around the stump, I found some periwinkle that somebody planted on the side of the church last year. I moved it over to the base of the stump today.

    Any thoughts?

I am not a hundred percent sure of your weather there but seems to me that would be the way to go. They look pretty can be sniped back late summer for another bit of flowering and all they should need is water if you have given them a good pot of soil. Then next year try something else in the annual line or mix a couple of things. Just re do the soil each time.
