I am trying to figure out what kind of Maple tree has deep red leaves most of the year. It is growing in the Minneapolis Minnesota area.
If too cold for Japanese maples there then probably purpleleaf Norway maple. There is more than one cultivar of each. Some sycamore maples also come with purple leaves, I don't know if these grow there. Purpleleaf Japanese maples are mostly small rounded trees, the other two grow tall.
I called a local landscaper and he suggested it may be a Acer platanoides ‘Crimson King’ Norway Maple. I looked up the description and appears to fit.
I'd like to confirm I have the same tree. I was looking for the name of it, and found this thread. image attached.
Not the same. Yours is a form of Acer palmatum. Search for platanoides crimson king and I'm sure you will get lots of pictures of the tree in this thread.
There is also a Norway Maple variety named 'Crimson Sentry' which is similar but has a narrower, more upright form.
