My husband and I just bought an older home in Florida. It has a group of banana trees along the west fence. There is fruit on one of them and I have no idea what to do. First of all, I need to know what kind of banana and when and how to pick the fruit. I would also like to know if I should fertilize them now or wait until spring. I have attached some pictures of the trees. I would greatly appreciate any help I can get with this.

Hi pacarp, not sure of what variety banana you have there, or very sure about banana care in Fla. as I'm in Northern Illinois but I would keep fertilizing all year round in Fla. a very helpful site you may want to check out is Bananas.org , a ton of info and Very Freindly folks, mostly hobby growers with a bunch of experience and practical knowhow. Check it out!!! I'm sure you'll get answers.

Not sure of the variety, but for botanical purposes, banana 'trees' aren't actually trees. The 'stem' is actually a pseudostem made of each of the banana plant's leave sheaths. Nice plant you have there though :)

Excellent point. It's about as far apart as a car and a skateboard, both have four wheels, but that's about it.
As a side note, once the pseudostem flowers and sets fruit, it will die. Offsets will grow to continue the cycle.

    Cheers, LPN.
