hello. we came across a tree the other day in a ravine in north vancouver that we didnt immediately recognize. unfortunately we only happened to take a couple photos of the trunk and bark, but would appreciate if anyone happens to recognize it. Am curious if its something native or if its an introduced tree.

Why is this not just another Alnus rubra? What made it look different to you?

oh is that all it is? ok cool. i am a complete amateur and i am working on trying to sort out the native varieties of plants in the area. it seemed enormous for an alder, and i wasnt sure how to id it from the appearance of the trunk and no leaves or catkins or anything within reach.

lots of leaves on the ground ;)

I find dormant season ID at times to be much easier than in season ID, formation and arrangement of the buds is a good tell tale of species.
