My roomate moved out and left 2 of these plants. I water it and talk to it.....but have no idea what it is, or if im caring for it properly. It hasnt died yet so I must be doing something right. --My other question is can I cut back some of the leaves so its no so "Hang-y". HOW DO I INSERT THE PICTURE?????? I can also e-mail a picture. help!!!!
This is a Sansevieria species, generally found in African deserts... Don't water it more than once a week or so if it's indoors, and make sure to give it plenty of sunlight. You can trim it back if you really feel like it, though I generally don't recommend it as a whole. Any trimmings can be given to a friend to immediately put into some good moist soil, and they'll root out and keep growing...
Just make sure the soil "completely" dries out before adding anymore. Treat it like a succulent. I usually water mine once every three weeks, to every month, less in the winter. I noticed many of the leaves on your new plant are down around the pot, thet may need to be planted down a little more deeply, or tied up around with the up-right ones with some sort of soft material. If you don't have an inch between the inside of the pot and the rootball, you may need to repot the whole thing, when these plants get REALLY root bound, they tend to push themselves out of the pot. Use a pot (with drain holes) up one size larger with good draining reg, or cactus soil with something like Perlite added for added drainage. Sans hate wet feet. Sans do well in bright indirect light, direct sun can burn the leaves.
Thank you so much for the advice. Its really strting to hang a lot (both plants). I did re-pot it about 2 years ago, but maybe I should re-pot it now using the new advice. I think I was affraid to bury it to deep, but from what you guys (or gals:) say its not a problem.~~~I was also thinking about just cuiing off some of the "hangers", but let me try to tie them up first.
P.S. all the leaving hanging down are ALL old leaves, not new. The new ones grow straight up and strong.
