Hello, I received this plant, from my landlord; he was going to through it out... I don't know the name of it though>? Anyone recognize this one, I'd like to know what it is, and how to take care of it...? Thankyou!
You know, I'm going to disagree with Ron on this one. To me, that really resembles Aphelandra squarrosa, commonly called Zebra Plant. It's possible that it's a Croton, but I've grown a number of them and none had that distinctive white venation. Compare If you give it more sunshine, it will most likely turn a deeper shade of green.
Hi Lorax I believe that it's a Croton ; because when I first received it from the landlord, it was a very colourful plant. There were yellows , reds, pinks running through the leaves. But I have kept in a shady area, and the plant lost it's colours.. that's why the green and white came through....instead of the true colours.. (not enough sun). Thankyou for your imput though, appreciate it!
I came across this website, http://www.plant-care/crotons ; and when I saw the colour in the plant on this site, this was identical to what mine looked like when I first received it. (very vibrant) ... can't put it direct sunlight though...it will burn the leaves I found that out too....oops. It's fine though; I've figured out the light it needs, and hopefully it will be happy in it's new home. It doesn't like really hot temperatures either.... hmmm? So, I have to dabble with this one a bit more; but I'll put more feed-back on here, when I find the right combination...And since I live in Ontario...where the weather is extremely cold to extremely hot, this should be alot of fun..!!!
bright indirect light will keep the coloring on the leaves vibrant enough...no need for full sunlight at all. well, maybe some morning sun for an hour or so when it's still not too hot - especially up where you are, that would be okay. full sun isn't necessary, though. i keep my croton (a different one that what you have) in a spot between two windows (that are on adjoining walls) the morning sun comes in the one window and the early afternoon sun in the other. i have the plant on a table in the corner so it gets the indirect light for a good portion of the day...the first part of the morning it's the brightest, then barely anything and then a few hours fairly bright and then it fades out as the sun is blocked by the house next door. it's doing really well and it's kept the coloring very nicely.
Thankyou once again Joclyn, that's great advice. My balcony faces East, and the morning sun shines directly onto it.. That's where my Croton is located (East window)..getting the morning light. It's not too hot for it in the afternoon then when the sun is over the building at around 1pm.
