My mother has been working with a landscape designer to make her yard more private and easier to maintain. The designer suggested a Magnolia grandiflora for a corner of the yard where there is often standing water for 24 hours after a heavy rainfall, while the ground may remain "squishy" (!) for weeks at a time in winter.

    M. grandiflora doesn't seem like a good idea to me and I am afraid she'll waste money and be disappointed if she puts one in. Does anyone have any thoughts?

Try Magnolia virginiana var. australis instead. Selected cultivars that have been on the market include 'Henry Hicks' and 'Santa Rosa'.
