We have a western hemlock in our back yard about 65 years old. Last couple of years noticed sap and stains at the base of the tree with fine sawdust accumulations around. Assume this is some kind of boring pest but can't find anything online specific to these symptoms. Hope attached photos give a clear picture.
    Thanks

Often native conifers attract borers when already having problems - what does the foliage look like? Apparently not liking the increased exposure, existing hemlocks may gradually drop out when lowland stands are opened up for development.

Believe it is ok. Does have a lot of cones and fresh needles/cones later in the spring. There are other hemlocks near by and we are north facing. Considering the width of the base being quite large would borers weaken the base, there isn't a lot of sawdust. Have considered having the tree pruned to remove some weight and open up the canopy. Taking it down would be an expensive job and do like having the tree.
