Wendy Cutler and I started our Power Cherry Scouting trip with a stop at Ambleside in West Vancouver. The sun even popped out on cue. 'Akebono' just past peak bloom.
‘Okame’ on Nelson, east of 22nd Street are diseased. I was shocked to see the state of them today. Sad.
Horseshoe Bay major ferry terminal - the end of line for Blue Bus 257 - foot passenger zone this afternoon photo and for comparison - a photo post by @Willard of April LAST YEAR 2023 The many trees at Park Royal mall are not showing —— last year that was around April 09/23
Yes. We should remember to use the cultivar names (instead of saying "trees") in our posting texts. People don't see the names in the photo names, particularly on phone devices. I see that I have not been remembering to do that.
Blossoms today March 22/24 at Park Royal mall looking toward north side of Marine Drive approx 2 blocks west of Taylor Way (London Drg store) speaking of Taylor Way, aren’t there several blossom trees on upper Taylor Way as it enters the Guinness British Properties? Has anyone been that way recently ?
The ones that are on our map? Neighbourhood Maps (vcbf.ca) If you mean the row of 'Kanzan', they won't be in bloom for a while. I do need to change the blooming dates on the later-blooming trees though, have set a reminder for tomorrow.
Yes the map :) Yes, the Kanzan tho I don’t see the Park Royal mall (easily accessed by transit busses) fabulous display marked with red pin on the map
Yes, it has a blue marker - they were so young when they were first posted that they were not much of a photo op. I'm afraid your rainy day photo is not going attract the photographers. If someone posts a photo that would make people want to visit just to see them, I'll change the marker to red.
The photo with person in green bike helmet is very sweet picture yes it is! Petal perfection today at BCFerries HShoe Bay foot passenger ticket booth
This is the current state of the cherries at the top of Taylor Way in West Vancouver. Taken this morning .
@DerekK, I now declare you a Cherry Scout (or have you been all along?). I hope you know you are welcome to post ornamental cherry photos in any of the Neighbourhood Blogs.
A beautiful tree at the southeast corner of 13th Street and Inglewood Avenue in West Vancouver. . The cherries at Park Royal are at full bloom right now and look great. These photos are along the main entrance road to London Drugs on the north side and there are some that extend across to the south side road entrance to McDonald's. There is also another row of about 8-10 trees further west at the road entrance to Whole Foods.
@DerekK, thanks for posting these. We seem to have settled on 'Somei-yoshino' as the cultivar name for the ones on the north side. I've added a link on the Neighbourhood Maps (vcbf.ca) marker popup to your posting and one of your photos for the north side. You can see all the markers in an area by clicking the Search tab on the left and selecting the neighbourhood. I have put a marker on the map for the ones on the south side. You could check to see if I have it in the right place. They're sort of approximate, since we only want one for an area, but there should at least be a tree where the marker is. And could you post photos of the tree showing the shape, and closeups of the flowers, so I can see if they're really the same cultivar as on the north side? Thanks. I'll add a map link to the photos. @Georgia Strait, I have moved the marker closer to London Drugs, removed the older duplicate marker, and have made the marker red for favourite.
You are terrific Wendy and thank you for the scout newsletter looks like an upcoming Easter wkd of blossoms and sunshine at the BC Coast https://weather.gc.ca/city/pages/bc-74_metric_e.html
@wcutler These first 3 photos are of the 2 rows of trees near Whole Foods in Park Royal. The last photo is looking north to Marine Drive. The next 3 are from the row that crosses Marine Drive to the south entrance to McDonalds and Home Depot from London Drugs. I didn't get a distance shot of the tree shape as the heavens opened and this was all I got before beating retreat to my car. They all look like the same variety as the north side trees. I guess the mall plants the same trees whenever they have a new area to plant. There are also some very small trees in flower near to Taylor Way where the new condo building is.
@DerekK, thanks for the photos. We will have to check one year when the flowers are just opening, at which point it is usually easy to distinguish 'Akebono' from 'Somei-yoshino'. I have added a link on the map to your posting and one of the photos.
These 3 trees in front of 385 Rabbit Lane in West Vancouver are still in full bloom. And, an update on the trees at the top of Taylor Way. These photos were taken yesterday. FYI, there is road construction on both sides of Taylor Way until May 3rd so there is no parking by the trees. You would have to park elsewhere and walk over to view them.
First tree is at Stevens Drive and Hidhurst Place. The current state of the Taylor Way trees. This last tree is on the north side of the Taylor Way roundabout at the west end of the other Kanzan trees. I'm not sure of its variety.
