I have a bunch of Hens and Chicks succulents in my front yard and I harvested some of them a couple weeks ago to put into a succulent terrarium. Today I noticed that some of the ones in the terrarium are sprouting what look like stems with tiny leaves on them. They are coming from underneath the plants. I attached a picture. Anyone know what it's doing?
Well, from more research I guess this is how it produces more chicks. With the ones in my yard the new chicks seem to pop out from the ground so I didn't know the hen plant actually sent out chicks on a stem.
Well, they are going to bloom. See my picture here: http://www.botanicalgarden.ubc.ca/forums/showthread.php?t=74390
It was my first thought, but after some investigation I think you are very likely right. However, developing long stolons like this with chicks at the end is rather rare with Sempervivums.
I thought that when they bloomed they started elongating from the center. these are like little stems that come out from underneath.
