My Grandmother has a weeping cherry tree in her back yard that has always been the most beautiful tree. I have no idea how old it is but I am 28 and I know that it was full grown when I was a very young child. The tree appears to be dead but will sprout a few leaves from the top each year. It's been this way for what I'm guessing to be 5 or 6 years. She once had a gardener who told her that this is a normal cycle for the Weeping Cherry tree. My Grandmother passed away this year and I'd like to make sure I'm doing what I can to preserve her tree. Does anyone have experience with this? I sincerely appreciate any and all help! This is very important to me and when I stumbled upon this forum, I registered and am so happy to now be part of your planting community! Thank you for your time! ~Kimberly in Rose Hill, North Carolina

There's nothing normal about it being nearly bare during the growing season. A full set of leaves being produced each spring and then all dropping at the same time in fall, leaving the whole tree bare for the winter is normal.

Thanks, Ron B, for your reply. Do you know if it's a life span issue or should I investigate the problem further as possibly it could be corrected?

As with orchard cherry trees multiple different bugs and blights commonly attack these. If there is hardly any live growth left probably best to remove the tree.
