I would like to Know if anybody has any information on potassium based polymers which absorb and release water into the soil. Does it work? Does it reduce watering?

The general concensus here is that they should only by used in planters or hanging baskets (and only in the summer), but that even here, their benefits are debatable. With frequent rainfall or irrigation, polymers can contribute to waterlogging, especially with soils or mixes high in organic matter. See this link to Colorado State University for a more thorough discussion.

Adding a layer of mulch to the top of your garden can help keep water in your soil as well as reduce weeds. You're still going to have to water during the summer though, especially if the weather is dry.
