I have a Franquette walnut tree, planted last year at this time, and I think about 3 - 4 years old. It's about 8 ft tall. Last season it didn't seem to have enough leaves on it and I wondered about its health. This spring there is still no sign of leaves or what would appear to be buds. I have scraped back the outer bark in a few places and there is green underneath so it seems to have some life yet. Are walnut trees late to start ? I am in zone 8 near Victoria. ( all my other fruit trees are with leaf and/or blossoms.

They tend to be fairly late to leaf out. I wouldn't worry yet.
