Can anyone identify this plant so I can figure out how to take care of it? Most of them were knots of root like plants - this is the only one in the group that stood up. It has pink to red flowers and looks like some type of tropical bonsai (if that exists). I hate how Walmart gives you nothing but " 8" Premium Foliage" for a description!!

    Thanks

That's exactly what it is - thank you!

Walmart should be ashamed to sell a highly toxic plant with the label " 8" Premium Foliage." How many pets will die because people have no idea this is a toxic plant? None of the 10 or so plants at my Walmart had a label of any kind other than the price tag. I doubt they would sell so many of these if people knew what they were buying. Is this intentional? I hope not!

beard, the majority of plants that are sold in stores have some measure of toxicity to pets as well as humans. most aren't really any danger unless a large amount is ingested.

i've never seen a one marked as such either (not even dieffenbachia, which is actually QUITE toxic even in small doses) - and i've bought plants in different types of stores: mom/pop and big box garden centers, flower shops, stores like target & kmart, grocery stores and i've purchased online as well. never any notice that the plants are toxic in any way/shape/form.

as with other possible dangers in your home, if you have pets or small children, it's YOUR responsibility to think about, and investigate, possible dangers when bringing something new into the environment...it's not the retailers responsibility.

the aspca has a listing of plants that can cause issues with pets - and they have the lists organized by type of pet, too.

Not all stores are like that, the florist that I work for we give detail care intructions and notify customers if plants are toxic or not. Places like Wal-mart are huge corporations and don't care or have any interest in id of the plants that they sell because they are a loss leader. They carry the plants in there stores at extremely low prices, so you will buy them but while your there you are going to look around at other things too and more than likely buy lots of other stuf too. If you buy plants from reputable stores ( florists,nursuries,etc..) they should have proper id,care, and whether or not the plant is dangerous.
