    HI there ,
We are just down the road from the UBC Botanical Gardens and have a very old cherry tree that needs a major pruning . The trunk is approx 18 inches in diameter . The cherries it produces are fantastic.... small but sweet. The problem is it is 2+ stories high and the majority of the fruit is at the top where we can't get it. Soon the fruit will start to fall off. The fruit season is almost over. Any thoughts on a drastic prune?

    thanks
    Gord

Gord, what did you have in mind? hiring someone or doing it yourself? now is not the best time for drastic pruing by the way.

There's never a good time for "drastic" pruning of a mature tree.

As an ex landscaper I had planned on tackling the job myself , I was just looking for some advice as to timing, and strategy. From the last 2 replys, I assume now is a bad time. Which I had already guessed at.
I was mostly wondering if it should be an late fall, winter , or spring job, and how much to take off.
