can anyone tell me the major morphological differences between Vaccinium ovatum (species) and the cultivar Thunderbird. I need this information for a Kwantlen college horticulture assignment which could end up on a internet plant database. can you tell me if the height and spread are much different and anything else that is distinguishing.
From the UBC NEw Plant Introduction fact sheet, I see that 'Thunderbird' is a clonal selection--meaning there should be greater consistency of form in the growth of this selection versus those found in the wild. I have tried using this cultivar in place of boxwood for low hedging, but have found it a little more straggly and prone to legginess than other possible species for this purpose. Other features of this selection: more intense red-bronze new growth and a profusion of blooms and berries (this I have found to be consistant). Tracy Penner
