Vaccinium ovatum 'Thunderbird'

Discussion in 'Talk about UBC Botanical Garden' started by Unregistered, Jan 23, 2004.

  1. can anyone tell me the major morphological differences between Vaccinium ovatum (species) and the cultivar Thunderbird.
I need this information for a Kwantlen college horticulture assignment which could
end up on a internet plant database.
can you tell me if the height and spread are much different and anything else that
    is distinguishing.

From the UBC NEw Plant Introduction fact sheet, I see that 'Thunderbird' is a clonal selection--meaning there should be greater consistency of form in the growth of this selection versus those found in the wild. I have tried using this cultivar in place of boxwood for low hedging, but have found it a little more straggly and prone to legginess than other possible species for this purpose.

Other features of this selection: more intense red-bronze new growth and a profusion of blooms and berries (this I have found to be consistant).
