Picked this bare bulb up at walmart :) It said elephant ear - of course this really means nothing to us botany people :( I know the only leave looks a bit messed up, it is, I kept touching/poking it when it was growing. Probably will have to wait for a better leaf for an ID. But here's the photo:
I just responded on your other thread saying that it looked like an Alocasia, but looking at that pic possibly Colocasia, but for me, I will need to look at a new leaf. But Mick or someone else might know from that pic... Ed
Yeah, hoping photopro might be able to take a look also. Definitly will take another pic when there's a new leaf.
There are right now, 3 more I guess corms popping out around it. Should I let them grow, or might it have a negative effect on the full growth of the main stem?
If the leaves are soft to the touch and not like cardboard, then I think it could be a Xanthosoma. But since the specimen is very young and its leaves have not fully developed it is hard to be accurate.
Ok edleigh7, they come out with their roots? I'm thinking they just snap off the original bulb - I guess not?
That plant looks to me like Colocasia; they are the ones that, in my experience, are most commonly referred to as "elephant ears". I'm familiar with that one because that Colocasia was the first "ear" I ever grew, back when I was a teen. LariAnn Aroidia Research
I've snapped a few new pics from today. All the smaller sprouts around are offshoots of the original tuber thing. For some reason the plants primary stalks leaves are sorta mangled, as you can the neither of the 2 largest leaves are 'perfect'. The smaller ones around it are normal. Maybe it's too warm at times in there, or maybe it's just from messing around with the corm when it was smaller? (It can get to around 100*F at times, hotter if I don't open the door in the sunroom).
After looking at your new pictures I have to agree with LariAnn so I also think it could be a Colocasia
Wow, I'm reading over this thread. This plant grows AMAZINGLY fast!!! Here are a couple pics I just took. :)
And it will be getting bigger and bigger, I keep mine always moist (the pot) I have seen them grow in water in small streams.
yes a Colocasia for sure ,,, my pink stem one has grown all through winter ,, broke a massive corm off , and my mate has taken it to his water plant nursery in Western Australia [ all legal , inspected and dipped etc. ] and it has grown very well .
