    Hi,

I live in Victoria, BC. I have moved to a new house where the previous owners planted cedars in the hopes of them becoming a hedge for privacy. Unfortunately they aren't coming in very well and are growing very slowly.

I've noticed around town that a lot of people tend to trim back the individual cedar trees in the middle only, making an almost hour glass shape. Is this to promote higher growth?

    Thanks!

No; sounds more like some peculiar fashion statement.

Maybe deer, which like popular Thuja occidentalis cultivars. Although browsed ones I have seen were stubbed back all the way from the ground up to the point where the cropping stopped.
