my neighbor has a blue spruce that is growing into his other neighbors maple...he asked if i thought he should "top" it and trim the top into a into a pointed shape....will doing that kill the tree? will it ever look normal? thanks for any advice
I would not top the Blue spruce, it would hinder it, and start growing sideways, while a new leader(s) are formed. The problem tree I would have thought is the Maple. If you want to control the growth of the Blue Spruce, you can trim the branches back. typically the arborists will remove about 1/3 of the branches in a spiral pattern. Sounds like a classic case of trees being planted to close together.
