Hi, There are two tricky spots in our garden and I’m having a hard time figuring out what to plant there. First is a strip beside our fence that is near the base of our neighbours cherry tree. This area is southwest facing and gets afternoon shade. Can we plant anything in the ground? Would putting soil or even more raised beds damage the tree roots? The second area faces south and is between the end of our raised beds and our fence. Obviously it is shaded by the fence somewhat. Would zinnias grow here? Any other suggestions? Any advice greatly appreciated! thanks!
For the first, more raised beds or additional soil will likely cause some root oxygenation issues for the cherry tree, yes. I get the sense you'd like something "tidy" for that space, maybe a small boxwood hedge?
