Hi everyone, Every different source I check says something different for max. height on Japanese maples. For example Ive read from 6-12 feet high for crimson queen, which is a huge difference. Can anyone recommend a good source for information? So many different sites totally contradict each other.
    Thanks
    Rob

The problem is, you are not shopping for a car or a chair. Plants vary. L. Chalker-Scott, Washington State University (see her web site) calls what you are trying to attain The Myth of Predictable Plant Performance. That's why mature* heights are often given as a range.

*"Maximum" implies height growth coming to a halt and remaining there while the plant remains healthy and attractive - this is also a false concept. Plants that aren't growing are dying or dying back

I fully understand variation in nature, and that there are always exceptions that is the beauty. Im not asking for a written guarentee just a good estimate, something better than saying a Crimson Queen grows up to 6' then another saying and up to 12'.
    L. Chalker-Scott, Washington State University (see her web site) could you give me an address Im not familiar with the name.
    Thanks

The problem is, take the same individual specimen - plant it in a good site, it'll get more than twice the height that it would if planted in a poor site. It all depends on what growing conditions you provide for it.
