I just watched a video of a tree being 'dug out' using an 'air spade'. Looked like a great idea for saving your back and the root system. Has anyone used one of these in a home garden? Would they be suitable for moving a large Rhodo or other shrub? Are they only suitable for use in a large open area like a lawn or could you use them in a bed with other plants a few feet away?

Can you rent them in the Lower Mainland or hire a contractor who has one? Does anyone know of a gardener or contractor who could be hired just to relocate a few large shrubs, or do they just do it if it is part of a major renovation?

If you get into this be sure to dig the planting hole wider than the spade-dug root-ball.
