I need to transplant my peony, which has not bloomed since I moved it to it's new spot, three years ago. I have determined that it's too shady where it presently sits. A coworker told me that I should have transplanted it, last month. I'm in Zone 7. Can I still fool the plant and transplant it now?
yes yes yes!!! fall is the best time to plant/transplant peonies... ignore your co worker, put it in full sun or halfsun half shade
Thanks for the response! Aye, I'll be transplanting it, this weekend, then, in a particularly sunny spot that I have chosen.
Just want to reiterate the "not too deep." That is the most common reason for peonies failing to flower. The top of the crown should be just below the surface, an inch should be good. They don't really like to move either, so try to pick a place where it can stay.
It is very likely that "too deep" was one of my transplanting downfalls, in addition to too much shade. I'll take particular care to remember that. Thanks for the helpful responses!
Also keep in mind that newly transplanted peonies won't bloom for another 2 or 3 years! They love compost so mix in a good amount to the planting bed. http://www.goldenport.com/peony/hpcare.htm Newt
Thanks for the advice and the link, Newt. I have gotten it transplated to a much better spot, and, I'll be looking for big gorgeous blooms in a few years. Annette
