Hi Heather, Fall is a great time to transplant and plant. Here's some helpful sites. http://www.ext.nodak.edu/extpubs/plantsci/trees/f1147w.htm http://www.tlcfortrees.info/planting depth.htm http://edis.ifas.ufl.edu/MG089 http://edis.ifas.ufl.edu/WO017 http://www.mdvaden.com/advice-landscape.shtml#wateringsuggestions http://www.treesaregood.com/treecare/mulching.asp Newt
Arbutus menziesii are very difficult to transplant. They are very prone to disease, which enters cuts or breaks in the roots, so you should dig a large rootball, trying not to cut the roots. It is possible though. See this thread: http://www.botanicalgarden.ubc.ca/forums/showthread.php?t=6539
