I have traded scions with friends for years and have developed many friendships that way. Many scions can be put in a small package and shipped Priority Mail for under $5. It's easier and cheaper to ship the scions than plants and there is little chance of transmitting bugs and other nasties.

There is an old saying: If you want to keep a plant, give it away. Send a few scions to a friend and if your tree dies or is destroyed, you know where to get scions.

great. well when this next winter rolls around, i will have lots of shishigashira, seiryu, ukigumo, fireglow, and sango kaku sions. I also have maybe 12 more varieties but in small sizes.....less scion wood. keep me in mind for trading.
