I've just lost two large containers of Clematis Armandii, probably because they're not as hardy as I thought they were when I bought them. I have a 4th floor "roof garden" with northwest exposure. The west side receives a fair amount of noise from the City, so I'd love to get a bit of a noise break growing on it. But I suspect that would be a tall order for containers....

My goal this year is to come up with a replacement for the Armandii that can withstand winter sun and frozen nights. I was thinking I might have to settle for Thuja because it's pretty indestructible (though I did kill one last summer by letting it dry out...), but I'd prefer an fast-growing evergreen vine. Someone suggested Lonicera henrii in another container discussion, and it sounds appealing. Could I get opinions about how tough it is? I get sun on that side all year, and sometimes gale-force winds coming from the southwest.

I'd be grateful for some expertise here.

    With thanks,

    - Linda
