I picked up a truck load of Colorado spruce in Oregon. In the loading dock, I noticed couple small (about 2 feet tall) Blue spruces in the pots. They told me, that I can take them. For some reason, top part was cut out. Is there any way, that tree will grow straight up again?

Apical dominance in blue spruce is a bit different from other plants. Normally the effect of cutting the leader/stem induces lower branches to grow - thus making a bushier plant. But in the blue spruce, doing this usually make a nearby branch become the leader (grow straight up). So in a way, there still will be a main branch, but it might look a bit odd.

BUT, you should also read this:

Thank you. I have similar situation on Norway spruces. But this is the result, that the leader but simply didn't develop this year. May by the result of winter weather. Would it work, if I simply put stick beside the plant and attach one of the branches, growing sideway?
