Hey guys, is it warm enough in Vancouver now to plant veggie seeds? Specifically: corn, peas, carrots, beets, radishes, lettuce, spinach and cauliflower? I've got the garden all ready and am eager to get started? If not, do you think putting clear plastic domes over the planted seeds outside would help so I can get them started soon? Thanks, Erin
Plant a few rows of radishes, peas, lettuce and spinach, wait two weeks and plant your beets. Then plant a few more rows of the what you planted earlier, that way if we do get another hard frost you haven't used all your seeds and your harvest time will be extended. Covering with plastic domes will help. Start your cauliflower indoors now if you can and plant out in late april. Corn needs warm weather to germinate, I usually wait until the Victoria day long weekend.
Ohhhhh....some one after my own heart.... I live in Langley and planted peas and spinich in early March along with onion sets. We had a pretty heavy frost a couple of weeks ago, but the peas are beginning to sprout. I have been out almost every day with a magnifiying glass (just kidding) looking to see if the spinich sprouted, and I'm begining to see plant life. I planted the spinich under a little cold frame I picked up last year at Outdoor Depot. I also planted early potatoes last weekend. Today I moved out parsley, cilantro, and kale seedlings that I started in the house under a light. I covered these with 1/2 of a 2 liter pop bottle; these cloches are a lot cheaper than anything you can buy at a garden center. I have Romaine under the starter light and I think I will but it out next week along with my broccoli. I'm going to plant carrots and turnips around the 1st of April. Radishes can go in now too. I use a simple test that works for me. I dig a hole in the ground about ankle deep. I fill it with water. Then I see how long I can stand in it. If I have to get out in less than 30 minutes its still too cold to plant. If you think about it I'm not being as factious as you might first surmise. Bob
