I just bought a 'PRINCESS FLOWER' tibouchina urvilleana. I would like to over winter it outside. I live in Burnaby Heights at Gilmore and Trinity. The USDA zone for Vancouver - Burnaby appears to be betwwn 7 and 9 depending on location. 4' high, 3' diameter. It is in a 16" pot against a wall. Facing South, and well protected from wind. Does anyone have experience of this plant in this location ?
Probably not. They need to be kept pretty much frost-free, particularly when in a pot. Aim for a winter minimum of about +5°C.
That was our experience at UBC as well. When we did have them, they were moved back into the greenhouse every autumn, and we're milder here at the garden than at Burnaby.
I had two, of which I left one outside, and the other I brought in. Safe to say, I now own one. I haven't found anyone who has gotten theirs to survive outside all winter.
Thank you for your responses. Well, it is a good reason to build that greenhouse that I've lusted after for years. A miniturized version of Decimus Burton's 'Glass House at Kew Gardens.' Ada.
I also live in the N BBY area (Napier + Gilmore) and I was looking into getting one myself and came upon this thread during research. I was also intested in having it in a pot. I am mainly looking for something that can grow to 15', evergreen, have nice foliage but if it flowers then so much better. Where did you purchase your?
