Those rascally rabbits....help!

HELP!! I live in a suburban area, with numerous urban forests near by. The other day, I was marvelling on how well my hostas are growing. The next day, they had been devoured, obviously by rabbits.

Rather than putting up a visual barrier, such as chicken wire, can anyone recommend something that I can place on my garden beds to stop the rabbits. I have heard that human hair is a good deterent, but who wants to have masses of hair sitting on their beds? Not I.
