Tallest Acer "Humboldt Honey" 157.8 ft. / 48.09 m

Sitting here typing from the Curly Redwood Lodge in Crescent City, California, during another redwoods visit ... Yesterday morning, I went down to Avenue of the Giants (Humboldt Redwoods State Park), and measured a tall maple I found there last summer. It's slightly taller than my first 155 ft. "fast and dirty" guesstimate. Apparently, this is the tallest of any Acer species in the USA, and I've heard of none taller anywhere else yet. Here's what I came up with for measurement. The laser photo shows the first increment. The rest of the the height was the trunk's extension below the laser.

Acer macrophyllum > Bigleaf Maple

Height > 157.8 ft. / 48.09 m
Circumference > 9.5 ft. / 2.89 m

Name > "Humboldt Honey"

Congratulations on a very nice find. Any idea on how old it is? I guess that competing with such giants forces the maple to grow so tall.

Do you have a picture (or a link to one) of the whole tree?

 

Tried a photo with an upward view, but the glare obliterated the top of the shot.

Among the redwoods, the top is either seen from beneath looking upward, or mostly blocked by redwood trunks and limbs.
