Hello - I am leasing a house with a large, terraced backyard including many (strange) fruit trees. One (actually, 6) such fruit tree is a very high plum tree. It has tiny fruit- the size of cheeries-ish, and they taste really good. The problem is, the backyard is terraced up a hill, and there's no stable place to put a ladder to get the 20 feet or so high fruit. Suggestions? Any idea what plum variety this is?

    Thanks!

There are many plum varieties, if it's still there they actually have a large collection of them at the USDA Experiment Station, Chico, CA. Maybe there is a similar collection closer to you, where you could go and see if any of theirs are the same as yours.

Making it significantly shorter would require radical pruning, not the best thing for the longevity of the tree. What about one of those fruit pickers that come mounted on a pole?
