We are looking for a tree that will grow about 25 feet high. It may partially hang over a walkway, so it does need to be trimmed into a canopy so others can walk below it. The arborist who cut down our dead tree recommended Sweet Gum or Styrax Japonica. We were also wondering about Norway Maple. Any suggestions or feedback on these choices for the Pacific Northwest (Victoria) would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

Only the snowdrop tree is liable to mature that short, unless you choose the 'Umbraculifera' Norway maple. Even then, there are some snowdrop trees known that are double that height. And its spent flowers and fruits produce quite a mess. But it is good for producing a lower canopy that you can still develop to be looked up into.

Sweetgum is way too tall, unless you plant a dwarf. And it is unusually short-lived. Many do not like the spiky fruits it produces, either. Normally fruiting cultivars and wild-type seedlings of Norway maple give off thousands of nuisance seedlings.

If you like maples, plant a native vine maple.

Thank you very much for the feelback. I found it really useful. Not sure what kind of tree to plant, however. I will check out the maple you mentioned.
