I live near UBC. Near Lord Byng High School to be more precise. Years ago - too many years ago - I planed two amaryllis belladonnas. I ignored them but noted recently that they were not blooming worth a darn and dug them up. It seems that my 2 have become 35, perhaps 15 large and 20 medium to small. I suppose that as a result, none of them have been getting adequate nutrition to bloom (although all or almost all of the bulbs seem very healthy). I will transplant as many of them as I can but I simply don't have room for all of them. I have little choice but to consign most of the small to medium size ones to the compost. Except I would rather give them away to a good home. They will not be happy if they stay out of the ground too long but if anyone wants some and can drop by in the next week, send me a message , .
They've bulked up well so have not been starved or otherwise subjected to a limiting site condition. Except for the curious lack of flowering, which of course implies something has not been right. Plant bulbs only just below the soil surface, when dormant, in moderately fertile, light, free-draining soil; extra grit can be added to improve drainage. I often see "free draining" but when it rains every day for months during the winter, I am not quite sure what that means.
If means water runs through it. Like when a soil has a high sand content. Instead of being retained. As with silty or claylike soils.
