I'm considering putting a Styrax japonica in my 20 X 30' front yard for a small tree. I've read that they need to be kept out of the wind. We live in Sunset Zone 6, Aurora, Oregon where it is not typically windy on a daily basis, but it would be exposed to wind on days that it is windy. It would also be in full sun, and on a berm w/irrigation. Do you think that it would do well there?

Probably being grown commercially in open fields near you. There's also a display garden and trial plantings at the OSU Experiment Station, near Aurora, where you can go and get some ideas of the environmental parameters there and see specimens of other kinds of trees and shrubs you might like to try. Some examples have been there long enough to reach significant size.

Hopefully there will be someone at the experimental station to talk to your your Styrax tree. Also, the nursury where you buy your tree should be able to give you some advice. While it is their business to sell, they would also want a happy (and returning) customer..

Common ornamental in this region, normal level of exposure fine.
