    Hi all,

Of the 35 or so maples I planted this spring, 3 appear to be rejecting. The reasons may not be the same for all 3, I wonder if anyone has any advice on how to save them.

    1. A. longipes ssp catalpifolium. This rather large (2.5 m) tree was leafing out when it arrived. It lost all leaves in a frost of -4C. It's in a good spot, well staked, well drained. No sign of emergency buds after a month, although the cambium is green when scratched. I've given it a light liquid feed. Anything else I might do to encourage it?

    2. A. platanoides 'Tharandt'. Again, a good spot for this 1.5 m whip. It started leafing out, (post freeze), now the little leaves have wilted. I've been watering and gave a light feed. What else can I do, should I dig it up and see if maybe moles have exposed the roots?

    3. A. rufinerve 'Erythrocladum'. The spot may have been a little dry, actually. I didn't suspect this because many places near it have been very wet. It has been pretty static, (all the other rufinerves are in full leaf), with a couple of very small leaves breaking through at various places. Most of the buds are unopened but don't look dry or dead. This tree was bare root (without a lot of root, either) repacked in an earth-filled bag for transport. I am making sure it stays moist, but haven't given it a feed. Suggestions?

Thanks in advance. Hoping I can turn at least 1 or 2 of them around.

For the maples with wilted leaves, check the understock and see if it is black or turning black.

Yes: Probably pathogenic infestations, rather common on maples it seems. The ones with frost damage could have been penetrated by pathogens where damaged by frost.

Gomero, no black to be seen. Ron it is possible that Tharandt has a bacterial or fungal problem. The others I don't think so.

Anyway, good news on 2 out of 3. The rufinerve is pushing out some more leaves, it seems to be slowly coming to life. Today I noticed quite low on the catalpifolium's trunk an emergency bud (this tree doesn't seem to be grafted). So the cold didn't kill it outright, I have high hopes that other buds will follow higher up.

The warmth of the last week has encouraged the frost damaged trees: silver cardinal is covered with emergency buds, mandshuricum is pushing new petiols. But pensylvanicum seems dead, sadly. It was a small seed grown plant, I think the stem froze through in spite of the protection. We'll see anyway.
