The leaves on our Stewartia tree are turning brown at the tips. I understood that this tree was pest free but we can find no reason for the leaves to be turning brown and curling. Could someone please help?

Are you having a dry, hot spell? have you fertilized it or near it? They are generally pest and disease free but they may brown at the tips or the leaves may go into their fall coloring as a response to some environmental situations.

My husband did put fertilizer around it as he does everything. We have been having a long wet spell since the beginning of spring. The end of the leaves are dry and crumbly as though they were burnt. Is there anything we can do to help this tree?

if the tree warrants it, try getting a professional soil test done.. locally it runs about $50 for the basic landscape test which will tell you more than most need to know about your soil condition, it may rule out or confirm the fert burn at a glance. Is the tree in standing water? very wet soil? it may have root rot issues or lack of aeration at the roots causing dieback and lack of ability to transport or absorb moisture and nutrients. for the soil test, try contacting your local county extension office they probably have a service they could provide or a company they can recommend.

    Thanks

Thanks for the info. We have a wonderful garden, over 1000 rhodies, about 75 mountain laurel, lots of Holly, Hostas, spring and summer flowers and many different kinds of trees. We usually don't have problems with any of these plants and if we do we generally know what to do but the Stewartia has us stumped.
