Stem rooting

I have a Maple, 'Japanese Red' Acer palmatum 'Atropurpureum'.

I have read about methods of scraping the bark down to the white flesh, applying rooting hormone, covering with moss, and wrapping to root a limb. Can this be done with a Japanese Maple?

 

Sure, it can be done. It's called 'Air layering', and it's an old technique to reproduce a plant.

 

It can be done, but it's tricky, and you need to be very patient. Maples are not the easiest of subjects for trying this out if you've never done it before.
