I have a Maple, 'Japanese Red' Acer palmatum 'Atropurpureum'. I have read about methods of scraping the bark down to the white flesh, applying rooting hormone, covering with moss, and wrapping to root a limb. Can this be done with a Japanese Maple?
It can be done, but it's tricky, and you need to be very patient. Maples are not the easiest of subjects for trying this out if you've never done it before.
