British Columbia: Spinach in containers

I want to grow spinach in containers on my balcony, but when I've grown greens on my balcony in the past, such as kale and mustard, the leaves got eaten by pests. This doesn't happen in my garden plot, where there's a much more diverse array of plants to balance things out. Is there anything I can do to protect spinach grown on my balcony?

A floating row cover should keep pests off the spinach.
