Hi all, I have some questions regarding germinating seeds... I have a very top of the line incubator with heat and humidity controls right down to the slightest fraction. Could I germinate seeds in this? There is no lighting, just a clear panel on the door.. If I can, should I also put them in a bag or container within the incubator, or would that be redundant? Also, I live on Vancouver Island BC, and I would like to get a longer growing season out of my Palms and Bananas. I have a large greenhouse and I am going to heat it this winter... My question is, do tropicals in general need a period of dormancy to live? Hypothetically, if I were to use hydroponic lights in the greenhouse along with heat, would this speed up growth? If so, significantly? At what temp do most tropicals stop growing? Thanks so much April
Hi Lady, Don't double bag your seeds. The incubator is enough. You asked, "My question is, do tropicals in general need a period of dormancy to live?" No, many do experience a slow down during the dry season, but most do just fine in cooler climes that don't dry out. I can't answer the rest of your questions. Maybe someone else will come along. I wouldn't bag the seeds, it would more likely be damaging than redundant. Some plants might speed up a little, but it depends on which ones your refering to, and how much heat your talking about. Bananas are totally different than palms, you should try going to a web site about both, to learn the differences between the types, and the variteies, as there are so many kinds. try www.hardypalm.com, www.cloudforest.com, www.palmsnorth.com Carol Ja
Carol, you are the Queen of Tropicals! Thank you once again for the websites. Do you have a nursery? How do you know so much? :) Thanks April
Thanks for the flattery, I don't know if I would call myself the queen, I just have done similar things to what your trying, I have done the research part, and am at the next stage. Good luck. Carol Ja
