My Snowball tree really needs a trim . but its in Oct here and I was wondering if its a good time for it . its starting to crowd in my pathway . or should I wait till spring ? HELP Shirl In Timmins ON
Hi Shirl, There are several different shrubs with the same common name. The general rule is if it blooms in spring, prune within two weeks of the finish of bloom. These shrubs set their buds for the following years bloom after that. If it blooms in late summer or fall, prune in late winter to early spring. These shrubs generally bloom on the new growth. If the variety you have bloomed in late summer to now, you can prune it to clean it up a bit. Don't prune heavily as you could cause a flush of growth that can be damaged by frost. The snowball Viburnum - Viburnum opulus var 'Roseum' 'Snowball' doesn't get berries and is a large shrub that can be trained into a tree. It has maple-like leaves. It's best pruned just after blooming. http://www.missouriplants.com/Whiteopp/Viburnum_opulus_snowball_page.html http://www.durgan.org/2007/May 2007/27 May 2007 European Snowball Bush/HTML/ Newt
