I have recently discovered a nursery in Ontario that sells a lawn seed for a mixture of native grasses that put down deep roots and form a lawn that grows so densely as to eliminate weeds and to such a limited height as not to require mowing. It can be planted as a new lawn or seeded over an existing one. In the latter case it completely takes over in three to five seedings. The downside is that it is very expensive and has to be shipped from Ontario. I wonder if such a lawn seed is available here on the West Coast. Can someone tell me? I am speaking of Eco-Lawn, sold by Wildflower Farm on the web at <http://www.wildflowerfarm.com/index.php?p=catalog&parent=4&pg=1>. Many thanks for your help. Best regards, Jonathan
Just about all turf grasses could be characterized as growing so densely as to eliminate weeds - where site conditions favor the grass over other plants. If you want native species of grass you should be selecting seed based on what grows natively in your region. A friend got a nice naturally short turf under fruit trees in Whatcom Co., WA using the Companion mixture. It didn't look like a mown lawn, of course, rather more like thickly planted dwarf mondo grass. I'd surf "ecolawn" to see what else was being said about that particular product.
