Can anyone suggest fast growing native trees or shrubs that I might plant as a fence on a south facing lot on Savary Island. Except for early morning sun, the lot is shaded by large conifers, and most of the top soil is quite dry in the summer and covered with salal. I have tried red currant, and there is a large ocean spray, but in the wrong spot.I have also tried transplanting local cedar seedlings. Any suggestions would be very much appreciated.

There are lots of roses along the Fraser River south of Marine Drive in Vancouver. Wouldn't species roses work well on Savary?
